Construction has started on a dollar-intensive project to build a "New Bourbon Port" along the Mississippi River in Ste.

Ground was broken Wednesday afternoon for the multi-million dollar New Bourbon Regional Port south of Ste.

A port nearly 30 years in the making has broken ground, and construction should begin in three to four weeks.

U.S. Senator Kit Bond recently announced that the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority and the New Bourbon Port Authority will each receive federal funds from the Economic Development Administration to make repairs caused by the severe floods of 2008 and to upgrade systems to withstand future flooding.

Several new contracts will be announced at the July meeting of the Southeast Missouri Regional Planning and Economic Development Commission which will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Commission's offices located at 1 West St.

The Economic Development Administration has awarded the Southeast Missouri Port Authority $1,867,500 for repairs and improvements to the rail transportation system at the port, said executive director Dan Overbey.
