The trial of a former Memphis police homicide detective, charged with allegedly killing his wife two years ago as she sat at a computer in their DeSoto County home, is set to start next month.

State Sen. Merle Flowers, DeSoto County's senior senator, said Thursday he is resigning after serving nine years as a state legislator.
