Highway authority driven to improve

A group that advocates for the expansion of West Virginia 2 and the extension of Interstate 68 is renewing its push to improve roads in the region. The West Virginia State Route 2 and Interstate 68 Authority on Monday held the first of what could become an annual dinner meeting in an effort to raise awareness of its goals among elected leaders in the 10 counties it represents.

Deputies responded to a report of a gunshot victim in the roadway at Technology Drive in Martinsburg at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The victim, who was later identified as Michael Garcia, of Kearneysville, died prior to the arrival of law enforcement and emergency medical personnel.

Police arrest stabbing suspect

A Parkersburg man may lose an eye following an attack at his home early Tuesday morning, said Parkersburg Police Chief Joe Martin. John A. Meadows, 49, of Oak Street received stab wounds in his arms, abdomen and head and was transferred to a hospital in Morgantown for specialized treatment in a bid to save his eye after other wounds were treated locally, Martin said.

Now in its ninth year, the 2014 West Virginia Brownfields Conference will be held Thursday and Friday in Huntington, with organizers expecting about 175 people to attend, said Patrick Kirby, director of the Northern Brownfields Assistance Center at West Virginia University.
