Lawmakers split over whether to count illegal immigrants in Census

The approach of next year's national population survey is rekindling a longstanding debate over whether to count undocumented immigrants.

Inland Southern California's congressional delegation is divided on the issue, which holds huge fiscal and political implications for California.

The question re-emerged early last month in the Senate, where Sens. Davis Vitter, R-La, and Robert Bennett, R-Utah, offered a measure requiring people responding to the 2010 census to state whether they are American citizens. Their aim: to ensure illegal immigrants are not included in the data that governs the apportionment of congressional districts and the distribution of federal funding

.

"The law is the law and illegal immigrants should not be counted in the U.S. census because they are not U.S. citizens or legal residents," said Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Corona.

Bill revisits immigration debate

WASHINGTON - House Democrats on Tuesday unveiled their latest plan to provide a path to legal residence for millions of undocumented immigrants, though major obstacles loom.

Proponents of the legislation, including Rep. Joe Baca, D-Rialto, hope the bill's formal introduction will renew debate over what to do with 12 million illegal immigrants, an estimate accepted by many academics.

Similar attempts fizzled in 2007 and last year, partly due to veto threats from the Bush administration. But the new bill's supporters believe their chances are improved with the election of President Barack Obama, who has vowed to make immigration reform a priority.

School Board Member Victoria Baca's, Trial Continued to January 19, 2010 at 8:30 AM in Dept. 62.

This is a stalling tactic used by defense attorney's knowing that the charges don't warrant the amount of monies this will cause the people. This will normally lead to a dropping of the charges in the best interest of the people.

It has been six months from the date of her arrest, a demurrer was filed in the case on her behalf (which failed), she is no newbie to the court system, so why the need for the defense to seek a delay?

Again I take issue with the sealing of the police reports themselves. Who are they protecting, themselves or an elected official? What do the reports contain which they feel should be kept from the public?

Say It Isn't So!

It seems that the Moreno Valley Chamber of Commerce as well as our City Council has forgotten about their calls of Shop Moreno Valley.

It wasn’t that long ago our city, with the support of the Moreno Valley Chamber of Commerce approved the development and the changes necessary for the infamous Highland Fairview Corporate Park Project.

This approval was claimed to be a stimulus for local employment, and tax revenues to the city, which echoed the same theme that is often heard by council members in their calls of shopping east of Day Street and keeping the sales taxes which pay for things such as police and fire services here in Moreno Valley.

Not far behind them is the Moreno Valley Chamber of Commerce, with calls of Shop Moreno Valley, and whose purpose it is to encourage local business development and patronage.

Well I guess those calls of Shopping Moreno Valley were meant for the common folk, or both the city council and the Moreno Valley Chamber of Commerce have forgotten that we citizens give funding to the Moreno Valley Chamber of Commerce, through the approval of the Moreno Valley City Council.

Robin Hastings Recall Attempt Drawing to a Close

As of October 22nd, the attempt at obtaining the required signatures to qualify for an up or down vote by the citizens of Moreno Valley's east end will draw to a close.

The only question now is do those who supported the recall effort have the signatures required to place the issue before the voters?

At last known count the effort was falling short, however the effort still was moving forward, even though it was plagued by the lack of volunteers to assist in the signature gathering, there was no shortage of those wishing to sign the required petition.

However it must be noted that those who have made claims that the recall has or will be defeated, are incorrect, as there is no recall to be defeated. These claims go as far as saying it has been defeated at least three times already, or that it can or will never succeed because Councilmember Robin Hastings is supported by Victoria Baca and Delbert (Raul) Wilson, however both claims are false.

A recall can only be defeated by a majority vote, however it needs to be approved before it is placed before the voters by gathering the signatures required to call for such voting, and as of this date that hasnt occurred.

As for Ms. Hasting you would think that she would have supported the effort, so as to prove she was and is the person of choice for her district, as would the Moreno Valley Taxpayers Association, which has claimed she won by a mandate.

As for now only time will tell if the effort will survive and produce the needed number of signatures. Those of us who believe that the citizens should have their chance to be heard in the democratic way, can only sit back , wait and hope, that the claims made by Deanna Reader are true and correct as to how well things are going.
