Mountain lion found dead in Scotts Valley

About 9:20 a.m., the California Highway Patrol responded a report of a dead puma in front of a restaurant on the 1200 block of Mount Hermon Road, said CHP officer Brad Sadek. It was not clear how long the animal had been on the road's west shoulder, but it was pronounced dead at the scene and hauled away by authorities, Sadek said.

Pacific Grove wants to regulate sidewalk seating, parklets

PACIFIC GROVE >> While touting the benefits of outdoor "action on the street," Pacific Grove will nonetheless look at tightening its regulation of sidewalk restaurant seating and "parklets" at its Wednesday council meeting. The issue arose after city officials earlier approved an outdoor seating area in front of Cafe Ariana at 543 Lighthouse Ave. and a parklet in front of Happy Girl Kitchen Co.

Crews are on scene at Laguna Grande Regional Park where a body was found floating in the water Monday morning. According to David Nava, battalion chief with the Seaside Fire Department, a person reported around 10:30 a.m. that they'd spotted what appeared to be a person in the water.

New Data Shows California Drift Gillnets Not Sustainable, Continue to Kill Marine Mammals

MONTEREY, Calif.- The National Marine Fisheries Service has released new data showing that the California-based drift gillnet fishery targeting swordfish killed an estimated 53 marine mammals from May 2013 through January 2014. Fishery observers monitored 34 percent of the drift gillnet sets made last year; they documented that the fishery killed an estimated three California gray whales, six short-finned pilot whales, nine northern right whale dolphins, nine California sea lions and 26 short-beaked common dolphins.
