Insurance Bill Faces Veto Threat
Gov. M. Jodi Rell is considering vetoing a major health insurance bill after one of the state's largest insurers said the bill would cost the state more than $24 million.
Rell's administration was already skeptical of allowing municipalities, nonprofits and small businesses with fewer than 50 employees to voluntarily join the state's gigantic health insurance pool. But the bill was passed by wide margins in the state House of Representatives and the Senate; it was supported by most Democrats and backed strongly by major labor unions.

Meriden Man Sentenced In Assault
A Meriden man who attacked his estranged girlfriend and a man in a Southington parking lot two years ago, fracturing the male victim's skull in two places with a tire iron, was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison, suspended after he serves seven years.
Wilton Carraway, 35, apologized to both victims, but neither was in Superior Court in New Britain. The two were not identified in Thursday's proceedings, but when Carraway was arrested, police identified the woman as Jessica Balisciano, 31, of Meriden, and the man as Brendan Connolly, 26, of Southington. Rell Cool To Expansion Of State Worker Insurance Pool
“I just think it is a great opportunity for the state”
Gov. M. Jodi Rell expressed strong reservations Wednesday about a Democratic bill that would permit municipalities, nonprofits and small businesses to join the state employee health insurance pool.
Rell said she viewed the legislation approved by the Senate early Wednesday as 'well-intentioned,' but possibly harmful to the state employee health system.
The comptroller's office and her own budget officials have warned that the new pool could force the state to renegotiate with its health insurance providers. Read more
