Hispanic women make legal history in NM

Full story: Las Cruces Sun-News

The United States' Hispanic population is growing, but Hispanic women make up only a small fraction of the nation's lawyers, and they're rarely represented in leadership positions in the legal profession.

I wonder if they ever feel like they only got where they did because of their skin color? I want to be successful because of my mind and talent not because I think i'm a minority. I want to be successful based within everyone and not a segregated group.

These women got whether they were in spite of their gender and ethnicity. The ranks they hold indicate precisely that they are successful by anyone's standards. You don't become attorney general of a state simply by being a member of an ethnic group. That is not true even for white men, although we have an advantage most places.

If that's true, and i'm sure they got where they are because they have talent and are intelligent, why not lose the whole "hispanic" b.s.? Why not just be proud of your accomplishments due to your hard work, dedication, commitment, etc not because you're a member of some hispanic group? How many times do you see a white woman who was promoted because a white group got her there?

Can you say "affirmative action?" I'll bet you can.

In planet NM being hispinac is prequesit for any real government job.

So when is the institutional/ governmental racism that is Affirmative Action going to end? We can't prop up these people forever. AA devalues the American tradition of earning something on your merit. Hell, AA devalues/dilutes everything to the detriment of all. It is time to end AA and "level the playing field".

Total BS. I'd bet you $1000 they all got handouts and set asides to make sure they got where they are, in some form or another. I've got degrees from both NMSU and UNM, I also took a few classes at Western later.(a "Hispanic serving institution" joke) We know how it works.

We just get tired of hearing the labels. That's all. People are people and should not received scholarships, awards, etc, based on ethnicity. They should earn it exclusively on their ability which I am sure all ethnicities do.

That's NOT true. Your having RELATIVES in the job you are going for is the deciding factor, regardless of what cultural group, race, ethnicity,
national origin, gender, etc., you belong to. Blood is thicker than water, dude, especially in Nuevo Mexico.

I can say with 100% certainty that one of the best attorneys I have EVER worked with is Hispanic and now sitting as a Federal Magistrate in your fine city.

At the end of the day, knowing your profession is the litmus test, despite some whom wish to believe race is a factor.

Judge Martha Vasquez=one of the best on the bench. I was really hoping she would get the nod to the US Supreme Court.

Have any of you writing these negative comments ever try taking the LSAT. This is the entrance exam needed for admission into law school after obtaining your baccalaureate degree. It's quite tuff. Its not affirmative action. It doesn't matter if you are latina or a woman of any color. What were talking about is having brain power, simply being smart. It takes a very smart, competent and diligent person to get through law school. You go latina women professionals but more so way to go ladies who have worked hard to achieve these high professions.

YOu sure can study harder when you don't have to worry paying about your schooling and other huge bills that come with education, as well as not having to worry about being accepted to schools. You know like white males do.
