Lawmakers put their dibs in for next year's state budget
It was about 1:30 p.m., and state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe was in full flight on a favorite subject -- the spending demands of Gov. Ed Rendell.
Rendell refuses to call tax increases tax increases, complained Metcalfe, R-Butler, and he uses statistics to disguise the fiscal pain.
Members of the House Appropriations Committee -- all four of them there for his testimony -- didn't bat an eye at the rhetoric flowing from one of the Legislature's most vocal fiscal hawks.
''I don't know who is feeding the governor his numbers,'' Metcalfe said, drawing to a close, ''but Pennsylvania taxpayers certainly realize that the state extracting $230 million more in taxes is a tax increase.'' Read more
