Dangerous intersection in Lowell's Highlands will receive overhaul
One of the city's most dangerous intersections is about to get a major face-lift, as construction is set to begin immediately at the junction of Plain and Chelmsford streets, where officials hope new signals ...

It's about time. While they are at it maybe they need to worry about all the pot holes in Lowell that has caused us as residents unneccessary repairs. Isn't that why we pay excise tax?
I am sick of having to get my vehicle repaired at $800 dollars due to the bad roads. The connector has one spot that if you ride over it will cause damage. The same goes for 495 near the south lowell exit. FIX ALL OUR ROADS> |

It is about time. I've been in close encounter multiple times with other drivers thinking my green light is theirs.

now if they could only tear down the whole damned neighborhood

Wow! "It's about time" is an understatement. It's a gamble every time anyone uses that intersection. Sick of MA taxes?....Go out and VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!!!!!

Um, what's that about? I happen to live in that neighborhood, and don't really appreciate you comment. I am really excited about the idea that this intersection will be fixed up...it's so obvious when people aren't familiar with the intersection because they never know what light they need to be paying attention to. It can get pretty scary and/or horribly frustrating sometimes. |

Changing the traffic pattern at Plain and Chelmsford Street would be a welcomed change if it help stop vehicles from going through red lights. What concerns me more than the traffic is there is absolutely no clear marked crossings for pedestrians on Parker Street, Powell Street, Chelmsford Street and Plain Street. Don't those who live in that area have a right to walk to a store, whether it's Tedeshi, Wal Greens, Burger King, Jimmy's Pizza or maybe even McDonalds without being threatened by motor vehicles.
It setting a very poor example to have laws requiring traffic to stop for school buses but once cleared of them, they are no longer safe. They don't have clearly marked crossings within residentials areas, some streets don't have side walks, nor are there pedestrian crossing signals. Those who are proposing making these changes should not exclude pedestrians. Before the Lowell police start writing tickets for jay walking, they should be more concern about studing just how difficult it can be for those who want to cross a street or an intersection where there is absolutely no clear markings for someone to cross. |

Ed,
No marked crosswalks is just part of the problem. the lane markings for cars are obscure as well. hopefully this project will make getting around by foot easier. |

Why?

Dodging bad drivers keeps you agile. |

|
should put light on all four way intersection too...always got hit every time by these bad drivers.

That in turn keeps me young |

bad drivers are one problem but the confusing lights is another.
some people not used to the city coming from chelmsford st will confuse the powell st. light as theirs. another thing I've seen (literally today and always), drivers would stop dead in the middle of the intersection. so bad drivers, confusing light, and out of town drivers = accident prone |
