A mile(stone) reached, Chris Pearson completes fun run

Runners and those who watch them run are a supportive group, enthusiastically cheering and clapping for friends, loved ones and even fellow competitors as they cross the finish line at events from a local fun run to the Boston Marathon.

Such was the case at the Ralph Robertson Memorial Mustang Days Fun Run Saturday morning in Lovell.

But perhaps the biggest smiles and the loudest cheers were saved for a very special competitor, a person who earned cheers for walking a mile 20 months after a serious car crash left her wondering if she would ever walk again.

NWC field school examines ancient architecture near Big Horn Canyon

The route from Lovell up through the Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area (NRA) is bordered by rocks, sloping hills and canyons. The area is inhabited by wild horses and bighorn sheep, and a local (and not-so-local) research group is documenting evidence of Native American life on the rugged area near the Montana-Wyoming border.

The program got started in 2003 with just a few Northwest College students. The course was officially started in 2006, when archeologists from NWC and Indiana University teamed up for the research project and began bringing more and more students every year.

College Dreams scholarship program gets a financial boost

“It's an opportunity we saw that would change lives and strengthen the relationship that we have in our community.”

Years of work from the Big Horn County Health Coalition are paying off, as a donation will help fund a program to provide funds for area students for training after high school.

Chad Lindsay, director of the North Big Horn Health Coalition, District One psychologist Matt McNiven and TCT WEST manager Chris Davidson gave a presentation to the Big Horn County School District No. 1 Board of Trustees about the College Dreams scholarship program at their regular monthly meeting Thursday.

The program is already in place in districts No. 1 and 2. Currently, two students from each district receive the scholarship that pays $150 for every semester the student successfully meets program requirements. Through donations from sponsors, the program will be expanded to accommodate more students in school districts 1 and 2 next year. Read more
