LA mayor says blast that killed firefighter was 'freak accident'
“Because they were locked and secured, Firefighter Lovrien used his rotary saw to make entry, and during the course of making entry the explosion did occur”
An explosion that killed a firefighter responding to a series of electrical blasts in a neighborhood was the result of a 'freak accident,' Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Friday.
The mayor and the heads of the Fire Department and the Department of Water and Power were releasing results of the investigation into Wednesday's incident at a press conference.
Firefighter Brent A. Lovrien, 35, was killed, Fire Engineer Anthony J. Guzman, 48, was badly injured and a credit union building in the Westchester area near Los Angeles International Airport was badly damaged in the blasts, which blew covers off of manholes in the street. Read more
