West Morris High School Defeats Nutley

West Morris High School football team beat Nutley 42 to 0 this afternoon! Read more at High School Sports. West Morris 42, Nutley 0 (High school Football scores and results) The Star Ledger, November 21, 2009 6:26 p.m. By Sean Reilly No running back in the proud history of the West Morris program has had a performance better than the one senior Michael Burton put forth yesterday against Nutley. Burton ran 21 times for a school-record 304 yards and scored four touchdowns as West Morris gained a 42-0 victory in the semifinal round of the NJSIAA/Gatorade North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 playoffs in Nutley. Burton, a 6-1, 218-pounder, helped West Morris score on its first six possessions and earn a championship date against Passaic Valley in two weeks. ``We got the ball the first time, drove right down the field and that set a tone,'' said Burton, who now has 22 touchdowns, including 18 on the ground, for the season. Burton's rushing total surpassed the school record held by Scott Martorana, who ran 27 times for 275 yards and five TDs in a 47-25 victory at Livingston on Nov. 10, 1995. He also raised his season rushing total to 1,633 yards, breaking the school record of 1,492 set by John Karoly in 1985. And as crucial as Burton's running exploits were to his team's success, it may have been a play he made on defense that had the greatest effect on the course of the game. Nutley won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kick. Joe Dispoto returned the kick 33 yards to his own 46. After a three-yard gain on first down, Nutley fumbled the snap on the next play, with Christian Truglio recovering for West Morris. Burton scored eight plays later on a 3-yard carry, with Connor Young hitting the first of his six conversion kicks. Nutley then drove 12 plays to the West Morris 1, but a third down snap was fumbled for a one-yard loss. Nutley pitched to Antonio Sibilia on fourth down, but Burton tripped him up for a five-yard loss. ``That play changed the game,'' West Morris coach Kevin Hennelly said. ``Coming out with that stop really pumped up our kids.'' Burton followed his tackle with consecutive runs that resulted in gains of 16 and 19 yards. He scored seven plays later on a 30-yard carry for a 14-0 lead with 10:07 remaining in the half.
