OK you posters above, here is what needs to happen.

Rather than the silly "shortstop" program, a condition of not charging him is that the join the LA County Sheriff's Explorer Program. He will get to have a short academy, wear a uniform and be taught a level of identification with the police which will give him the empathy both for law enforcement and for staying on the correct side of law enforcement.

The cops would have been justified in shooting him, just as they were in Inglewood when a resident pointed a gun at them. Of course, the families of the suspect would be outraged. Lots of boys had BB guns when I was a kid, but they knew better than to shoot at a cop.

I've got an old Crossman co2 BB pistol whose shot is louder and more percussive than my Remington .22 cal long rifle.

In the cop's shoes, if I hear the report of the shot and the dink of the projectile (regardless of projectile size), I'd be quick to take cover and return fire.

The family of this moron should thank the officer for not putting their little bastard out of his misery!

As an Ex-Cal-Cadet - it is my honest opinion that EVERY wanna-be-gang-banger or WBGB-in-training should be:

1. recruited
2. trained
3. released

A lot of innocent-by-standers and family would be spared emotional agony ignited by "shots-gone-astray.

Teach the little MFers to shoot straight
Teach the little MFers to shoot clean
Teach the little MFers to identify their target
Teach the little MFers to identify their mission in life.

Bring back rifle-team, high school competitions. Make it a CIF sport - with a status up there with midnight Basketball.

Colonel Taylor taught us survival in life and in the city.

I'd simply take this one step further and make it a REQUIRED course in PE for high school (or jr. high school) graduation. Might as well level that playing field while we're at it.
