You gotta love the crowd, complain about the wacked guy, called the cops on him and then took it out on the cops. LBPD-Damned if they do. Damned if they don't. LBPD should have just took their sweet little time... then a neighborhood gang-fight would have broke out... ridding us of several more of these losers.

Why didn't the police just Taze him, make him do the "Funky Chicken" for awhile, and then take him downtown?

The information provided is sketchy at best. Based on the fact that the deceased man was "behaving violently and erratically," suspect that he was either on drugs or mentally ill. The crowd should wait until all evidence is in before coming to any conclusions. Police are "peace officers" and they will do whatever it takes to protect public safety.

RKJ, The Long Beach Police Department has a history of killing first before they truly assess the situation and they always respond ~ the officers feared for their own safety, which justifies the killing. The LB Police Department does not know how to deal with those suffering from a mental illness when they are called. If this man suffered from a mental illness, you should be ashamed of yourself calling him wack. I pray you do not have a family member suffering from a mental illness, if you do please educate yourself on the stigma surrounding mental illness. Maybe next time you will be careful with your words. Why would you ASSUME that a neighborhood gang-fight would of broke out and then to stay that it would help get rid of these losers. Excuse me, but you are the problem. RKJ wrote: You gotta love the crowd, complain about the wacked guy, called the cops on him and then took it out on the cops. LBPD-Damned if they do. LB Native, This man's "mental illness" most likely was drug intox... I am guessing there was a history with him.

Excuse me, but you are the problem. <quoted text> "Dealing with" mental illness has nothing to do with a police officer confronting a violent mentally ill subject on drugs. Even if this person was in an institution the only thing a DOCTOR could do would be restrain the person and inject drugs. I have not seen any police officer with a supply of said drugs. And to the training aspect, you moron, LBPD has one of the most comprehensive training programs for dealing/understanding with mentally ill subject. Even the four person MET (Mental evaluation team) say there is nothing anyone can do with a violent mentally ill person. This comes from the MET officers who have years of expierience dealing with mentally ill subjects in a field setting. Oh Yeah did you know MET Officers are partnered with either a phych nurse or Psych Doctor. But you would not know that since your dealings with mental illness has not been at the threat of the guy killing you or others. Sorry you think hugs and talking to a crazy person on drugs works. Want to blame someone, blame the state for closing all the institutions where many of the crazy people walking the streets should be.

All officers know that you have to have a good reason to escalate force. There is no way that force was escalated without justification/

Why does the PT carefully call the group of people threatening the police a "crowd" instead of "a predominantly samoan crowd threatened police? It's the lying that make for neurotic communities.

This is why I love the LBC: you never know when you're going to mix it up with an angry crowd of Samoans, African-Americans, Cambodians, Hispanics, Gays, Frat Boys, etc.

THE REASON WHY THE CROWD OF PEOPLE WERE ANGRY WAS BECAUSE THE LBPD OFFICERS SHOT THE MAN SIX TIMES IN THE BACK. Did the article say he was unarmed? Shooting someone in the back is not necessarily against policy. I almost did once when a large man was fighting my partner for their baton. I read the article and it sounds like the officers were involved in a struggle with this man. Not having a gun does not automatically exempt you from lethal force. Lets wait for all the details before we go around calling people murderers and what not. What if the guy grabbed an officer's baton? That can get you shot rightnow. I wasn't there, and it sounds like you weren't either, so lets just wait. There will be plenty of time for accusing and jumping to conclusions.

you notice that the man was described by his ethnicity (Samoan). this was used to inform readers that this was a large man and therefore much more difficult to take down. what is a cop to do when a large man acts out and doesn't cooperate? I'm sure the shooting is w/ in policy, which states, if a cop's life is in danger, shoot the bastard. GO LBPD.

Two assumedly well-trained officers with clubs, chemical mace sprays, and tasers should certainly be able to subdue and arrest a man without having to resort to deadly force. But then again, two similarly trained and armed officers in Huntington Beach also could not arrest a teen aged girl threatening to harm herself with a pocket knife, and, shot her dead with multiple gunshots.

How discouraging......these officers are putting their life on the line everyday to make our city safer and get into a situation were they could have been permanently hurt or killed....and they get zero public support in that neiborhood. I guess they want a ghetto!
