Gillespie School District CLOSED

Hundreds of kids won't go to school Monday in Illinois. The Gillespie School District shut down late Saturday night. The district's superintendent says the principal at Benld Elementary noticed cracks in the schools walls and floors Saturday afternoon. The principal says she was in the school earlier that day and there was no damage at that time. The district suspects the damage is due to mine subsidence, but that is not confirmed. The district says it is necessary to shut down the entire district to reorganize while school officials work to figure out what to do with the nearly 700 students who attend Benld Elementary.

Nokomis seeks stimulus money!!

Maybe Litchfield should start taking notes. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 may help the city pay for future projects, according to Nokomis Mayor Keith Hancock. At the Monday evening council meeting, he elaborated upon two projects that may come to fruition. The first project is a plan to improve and replace water lines in the northern part of the city. With a cost estimate of $513,000, one-half of that would be eligible for stimulus funding. Of that amount, 50% of stimulus dollars is forgiven; the other 50% would have to be repaid over a 20-year period at 0% interest rate. The other proposal would have Police Chief Michael Schoo submit a grant application to the COPS Hiring Program which, in effect, would pay for an additional full-time police officer for a three year period; however, the city would be required to pay for the fourth year of employment. Council members voted unanimously to proceed with both applications.
