Black History Month: Sumner students will appear in a production of 'To Be Young, Gifted and Black' on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the YWCA Black Box Theatre.

The play is the story of Lorraine Hansberry, winner of the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play of the Year in 1959. She was recognized for writing 'A Raisin in the Sun.'

One moment, the 5-year-old girl was playing in the yard of her family's rural Leavenworth County home.

The next, one of two brothers playing with her heard a sound like a clap and saw his sister fall to the ground -- bleeding from a gunshot wound to her head, authorities said.

The girl, unconscious when her father carried her inside and dialed 911, was flown to a Kansas City hospital, where she was in critical condition Monday afternoon.

Authorities still did not know much more than that about what happened to the girl, who was injured about 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the 12400 block of 170th Street, Leavenworth County Sheriff Dave Zoellner said. Read more

Tonganoxie Elementary School

New kindergarten schedule: Twice as much instructional time is in store for Tonganoxie School District kindergartners in the 2008-09 school year.

The school board voted at its Feb. 11 meeting to hold full-day classes every day. Currently, students attend class all day every other day: Monday, Wednesday and Friday on one week and Tuesday and Thursday the next week.

Four teachers now teach eight groups. The new schedule will require at least two and possibly three more teachers, said superintendent Richard A. Erickson. Read more

Chilingo: About 30 homeroom classrooms at Basehor Elementary School and the Sixth Grade Center are competing in a chili cookoff Thursday.

Students will fix chili in the morning, and school officials will judge in the afternoon. The winner will be announced and the trophy presented during a chili feed and bingo event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the gym of the school located at 15602 Leavenworth Road.

Chilingo is sponsored by the Basehor Bluejays Team, a parent-teacher organization. There is no fee for the dinner. Donations will be accepted at the door. Read more

School bond issue OK'd pending final count

Basehor-Linwood voters narrowly approved a $39.9 million bond issue Tuesday, according to unofficial results. But supporters didn't exactly break out the noisemakers.

A mere 13 votes separated the 2,181 who favored the plan from the 2,168 who opposed it. An additional 50 provisional ballots are in limbo until Monday when the Leavenworth Board of Canvassers meets to finalize the vote, said Janet Klasinski, deputy Leavenworth County clerk.So no one is ready to call the mail-in election just yet.
