Pianist keeps patrons dancing in elegance at Colony Hotel Polo Lounge
On an unassuming side road off A1A south of Worth Avenue, the Colony Hotel sits in modest tropical elegance. A relative Palm Beach newcomer at age 51, behind its white, French-door facade lies a variety of live entertainment, from soft piano stylings to full-blown cabaret.
The former can be found in the Polo Lounge, where a recent visit found a pianist, Kim Forman, a veteran of cruise line entertainment. A casual, personable pianist backed by programmed instrumentals, she has the well-dressed clientele dancing to everything from Barry White and Whitney Houston to Etta James and Astrid Gilberto.

Dance Machine host made right steps toward success
No one, no one, had a playroom like the Kennedy family's in Lighthouse Point. TV editing equipment and four cameras. A police scanner. Twenty - 20 - televisions. All because their son, still in high school, told them he was going to become a TV personality, and he needed to do mock newscasts. A decade after taking a cab to cover a shooting because he was too young to drive - for a 'newscast' only his parents saw - it's Jason Kennedy's time. He's the host of a network TV show, Dance Machine, which airs at 8 p.m. Fridays on ABC. The show merely cements his footing among the in-crowd. Last year, he made the Los Angeles Times' list of top young hosts, alongside Ryan Seacrest and Carson Daly. Two weeks ago, his picture made People magazine's hot bachelors issue, next to Lance Armstrong, Yankee Derek Jeter and The Office 's John Krasinski. 'I'm literally pinching myself right now,' said Kennedy, 26, who graduated from Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale in 2000. 'I wanted to go interview Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and cover premieres, and now I'm hosting a network show.' He caught the TV bug back during a fifth-grade field trip, when WSVN-Ch. 7 staff let him read the sports on the set. By the time he started as a 15-year-old volunteer cameraman at Comcast SportsTalk , a cable show just in the Fort Lauderdale area, everyone knew he was on his way. He moved up to co-host before heading to the University of Miami. 'He was still in high school and did better work than everyone. You knew he had it,' said host Ric Green, now president and chief executive officer of the Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Lighthouse Point studies higher fire protection fee
The city is considering an increase in the fire protection fee charged to taxpayers and, if approved after a hearing in the fall, would raise the tariff 2.7 percent.
'The way we calculate these rates takes into account a 10-year history of fire calls to all types of property in the city,' Finance Director Terry Sharp said about the assessments that began in 1997 and are not tied to property values.
The city's 5,684 residential dwellings would be charged $82.03 each, whether single family or multiple households. The 2007-08 fee is $79.86.

Library offers same services in tighter schedule
Eight months after the Doreen Gauthier Lighthouse Point Library reopened in an expanded and revitalized space at City Hall, the city's library is bowing to budget cuts.
Nobody lost a job; however, the three people who quit during the more than nine months the library was closed for renovation will not be replaced. As a result, Library Director Doreen Gauthier said the facility has been forced to weigh cuts in programming against cuts in hours.
'We simply did not have the personnel to cover everything,' she said of the decision to cut operating hours. 'We did not have the personnel to cover 69 hours a week and continue to provide the level of service that we were providing.'
