The national Concerns of Police Survivors organization gave the candles to her family as a symbol of peace and a sign of support for current law-enforcement officers and for those, like Hutchens, who have died in the line of duty.

A lightning strike Wednesday was so strong that it knocked out the lights at Shallowford Square in Lewisville, damaged the irrigation system and even overturned a picnic table.

After a year in which only one local school was recognized by the state as an Honor School of Excellence, six local schools achieved that status this year, according to a state report released yesterday.
