This story really touched my heart. So many times people achieve a level of success and forget where they came from. It is great to know this man has not forgotten the program that helped build him. Because of him, and the donations from the community, the girls will have something to show their children and grandchildren.

Marcus has always been a tremendous young man and a basketball player to be reckoned with both at Marshall County High and UT and his success continues in his professional career.
From his continued generous actions and the giving back to his community and friends----mostly anonymously----Marcus just shows us that youngsters brought up with manners, morals and good work ethics carry these family taught ideals and strengths forward into their adult lives.
Hats off to Janie and Otis for a job well done! Hats off to Marcus for never forgetting his up bringing and continuing to give back to the community that supported him.
Thank you Marcus the 2008 State Championship jackets and rings. They will serve as lasting memories for the young ladies on the 2008 Tigerette team

When so many people who have made good in the sports world are not positive role models, this young man does something that children can look up to in a positive way. Thank you Marcus Haislip. These young ladies will never forget your generous heart.

You need to ask the school. He said send him the bill in SPAIN! He didn't go with them. He couldn't. Instead of trying to start crap on the net call the school and do something about it.

okay...I have to ask. Did you yong ladies who did not receive a ring....not due to Marcus, I know....did these girls have suits all year long? Did they dress out and play in games throughout the year. I have read the letters to the editor in the paper and I am still confused. Was it that when a team attends a tournament, they can only have a limited number of players and this is why the girls did not have a suit for the tournament? Clarification would shed light on this one...HOWEVER, Marcus did a wonderful thing and nothing should be taken away from his generous act of love and kindness. There has been so much talk about this I just want to try to understand all sides..

no one said it was because of marcus they didn't get a ring. It says if he bought them how come everyone didn't get one? It is not like the school picked up the bill.
Yes they were part of the team that got them to state. Maybe not enough playing time. but, who decides that???

I was just wondering if they had been given a suit at the beginning of the season or not. I have heard so much talk and never have been told or not if they had been suited up all year....that was my question.

There were 14 varsity suits. Fourteen sophomores, juniors, and seniors (the same 14 from last year's state runners up team) dressed for the varsity games. The six freshmen dressed for junior varsity games but never for varsity games. They did ride the bus to all games (two buses had to be taken to carry all the boys and girls players along with the cheerleaders, managers, trainer, and coaches). When the varsity got away game pregame or after game meals, the freshmen did also. All players were fed by the booster club at home games. When the varsity got a jogging suit, the freshmen did too. When the varsity got a t-shirt, the freshmen did too. The point is not everyone who goes out for high school athletics can make the varsity team. Most are not ready for that level of competition, although there are exceptions. It takes time to develop what talent they have, learn the plays, and become a skilled player. The freshmen were supported by the varsity team. I saw them in Cornersville at a JV game. When one of the newest freshmen rebounded and scored, the varsity girls went wild cheering.

If you ever played any high school sport or even if you just watched, do you remember all the freshmen or for that matter everyone who went out from any grade making the team? No. High school sports are not Saturday morning league ball or t-ball where everyone gets to play and everyone gets the same trophy after the season is over. Players (not just someone who goes out to say they are on a team) know it takes long hours and work to make the team. I'm anxious to see how many of those freshmen are willing to do that in the coming years. Good luck to those who know what it takes to be a player.

Thank you, Marcus.

If they were treated like part of the team all year, like you say, varsity got a suit, freshman did too. Did the children know it would be cut off at state finals? Did they know they would be part of the same team, practice, eat, etc. EXCEPT when they won state.
I have always supported sports in MC> but, like many sponsors will reconsider. I, like the children, did not know there was a stopping point. You can travel with team, eat with team, get suits with team. But, don't go as far as to state with team.
I bet if you had got knocked down like these girls did , you would never play again. What would you have to feel good about. You were treated like an unwanted step child.
I am not saying it is your fault at all! You did more than your part. Can't the coaches and boosters step up and buy six jackets and rings????
I thought that donations went for the Whole team, not a few "special" players on the team.
Everything good that happens in this town always has to have a catch.
