Once into gangs, he's now into gratitude

“I lost a helicopter twice. No deputy could ever catch me. Y'know who caught me? The dog.”

In 1988, Conrad Muise was using heroin and needed a place to stay. His former wife agreed to let him sleep in a car in her backyard. via Daily Breeze

There are some people who are just a pleasure to know and to work with. They leave their impact on many. Wedel is one such person. Even though we only worked together briefly I still remember him as a caring warm officer.

Perhaps we are on to something here. Could it be that a primary ingredient of not wanting to do a life of crime would be a caring police officer?

Ok let's see what we got here. A criminal gang member who appreciates the help of a police officer. He is also a two strike felon. For all the touchy-feely reasons this is a good thing. This is where all the hand wringers and I depart. 1.) Has he paid restitution to all the victims of his criminality? 2.)He should be building a list of victims and either seeking their forgiveness or paying them back in cash for the vandalism, theft and emotional distress. I doubt he is doing this.

Going to prison just isn't good enough. And if you commit that third strike, I will be the first guy to want to swallow the key.

I think that this is a wonderful story. It shows that even the hardest of criminals can change. And as for Officer Wedel, I am sure if he helped this guy, he has helped many others and he absolutely deserved this award.

Keep up the great work Officer Wedel.

Det. Wedel has helped many others. I know of one instance when he tried to help a family, single mom who wouldn't listen to Det.Wedel when he informed her of her children's gang afflilations, one of her children died in her arms after being shot. Det. Wedel is a great man who deserves to be honored each day for his service, not only to the community but to humanity. If we could learn that respect gets respect and that is what Conrad Muise learned from Wedel. I'm sure there are other former gang members who owe their lives to Mark Wedel. Mark, happy to call you my friend.
