Seventh grade students and administrators from the Texas Science Technology Engineering and Math program who were selected to go to Alaska in June meet in the science classroom Thursday.

A total of $8.4 million in "quality-of-life" grant funds have been awarded by state officials to Willacy County, and another $1 million for Sebastian will be announced on Thursday, County Judge John F. Gonzales Jr.

Willacy County Judge John F. Gonzales Jr. has been studying county financial records since he took office and says he found that some funds owed to the county have never been paid.

Maria de Jesus Coronado has been taken to the maximum security unit of Vernon State Hospital for evaluation of her mental condition and for treatment, Willacy County District Attorney Bernard Ammerman said in a statement.
