The legislative bodies in six Shelby County suburban cities will take up final readings of proposals to start local school systems.

Lakeland became the first suburb to start the ordinance process for its municipal school district today in a meeting representative of the pace at which outlying cities need to approve their part of the procedure.

Lakeland commissioners will hold a special meeting at 2 p.m. today to deal with ordinances necessary to get the municipal schools referendum on the Aug.

With the blessing of election officials and a tight timetable, suburban governments are scurrying to schedule special meetings and public hearings to consider ordinances by the end of the month setting up municipal schools referendums.
