Before the dam breaks, let the waters rise
Call it the storm before the calm.
As officials prepare for the restoration of the Leaser Lake dam, local park lovers are in for a treat not seen in almost 10 years: A nearly full lake.
As part of the repair of the faulty dam, state Fish and Boat Commission officials are raising the water level by as much as 20 feet, which will put the depth just shy of its pre-1999 level. That year, the state drained the lake dramatically to protect the earthen dam after leaks were discovered.
The refill, which began in April, is to test the integrity of the dam prior to the $5.3 million repair scheduled to begin in the fall of 2009.
