Dolly Varden will see better days

Long Beach's historic Dolly Varden hotel, with its famous "Bath in Ever Room" procolamation on its roof, is being reconditioned as a European-style boutique hotel. via Press-Telegram

I for one, can't wait to see the upgrade done on a childhood landmark. Becoming a "European-style boutique" hardly qualifies as a "flop house".

Sounds like a cool project. I think these little boutique hotels are unique and I hope to see more of them in LB.

Wonderfull stuff! It says something about what's happening in downtown Long Beach in recent years when an investor is ready to make this kind of investment, renovating an old historic building, with the full expectation of making a profit. Congratulations to all involved.

I have heard about the "Dolly Varden" since I was stationed on the U.S.S Washburn here in 1964. Dolly was truly beautiful transvestite who came to Long Beach from San Jose to be near her wealthy male friend who was in some way related to the Bixby family.
He bought the hotel for her and she lived on the top floor in a penthouse. Her appearance as a woman was so convincing that she would often attend grand parties at the Bixby family mansion and used the head chef from the grand Virginia Hotel to cater her glittering soirées in her antique filled dinning room which also boasted several Monets and two Rembrandts. She died in the 50's and is buried next to her lover near San Francisco. |

The homeless will still be there, just not inside. Clean up the crime and drug problem over there, and I'm sure anything will succeed. Keep the status quo, and watch the place fail. Fixing up old historical buildings is a great idea, but whats the point if you don't fix up the surrounding area too?

I'm glad the sign will stay. When I was a docent for LB Heritage we talked about the hotel and Dolly Varden.

Yes he is. Charles Knowlton is well know for his active involvment in NAMBLA.
