A western Pennsylvania man is jailed on charges that he was driving drunk when his vehicle hit a buggy, killing the horse that was pulling it and injuring five people in the carriage.

North Clarion finalizes budget

With no discussion, and not even mentioning the fact, the North Clarion school board June 15 voted to hold property taxes for 2009-10 at the same level as 2008-09. District superintendent David Stake simply asked the board to 'approve the millage rate for 2009-2010.' And board members did -- unanimously.

Highlands makes Shaler assistant its new superintendent

An assistant superintendent with the Shaler Area School District is now Highlands superintendent-in-waiting. Joseph Latess, 52, of Cranberry was hired as Highlands' assistant superintendent Monday night, which means he will become the superintendent when acting Superintendent Louis Baldassare's contract is up next June.

Supervisors April 13 approved repainting the roof of the township building and the frame on a truck used to spread anti-skid. Supervisors also noted that Clarion businessman Rollie Burns has volunteered to paint markings on an emergency medical helicopter landing pad at the township park at no cost to the township.

The Clarion County commissioners will likely approve a letter today to support a joint effort between the county and Elk, Forest, and McKean counties to go ahead with a feasibility study to see if the counties could benefit from tourism and economic development boosts from a proposed rails-to-trails designation of the old Kane and Knox Railroad.
