The coming out party for the seedier side of campaign season kicked off Wednesday morning between incumbent J.M. Lozano and Bill T. Wilson II, now opponents for the House District 43 Republican primary runoff scheduled for July 31.

With 324 of 605 precincts reporting, Laurie J. Turner, a Gregory-Portland Junior High School teacher, led the Republican race with 22,938 votes, or 77 percent.

After 30-year State Board of Education incumbent Mary Helen Berlanga announced she would not seek re-election to her District 2 post, five contenders stepped up to vie for a party nomination, hoping to succeed the Corpus Christi attorney.
