Speed bumps stir controversy on Manor Road in Kentfield

We should be dong things to maximize fuel economy. Forcing cars to slow unnecessarily is not very "green". There should be a campaign to remove stop signs and traffic signals and replace them with roundabouts. Besides, speeding tickets are a major revenue source.

Most traffic engineers will tell you that paved speed bumps are not a solution to slow cars. The negative far surpasses the limit success. They can cause vehicles to loose control, they damage vehicle suspension, hamper emergency vehicles etc. and in this case, cars just try to drive around them.
Public officials are usually pushed into putting them in by citizens who don't know the problems they cause.
When you look at most areas that have speed problems...one thing usually lacking? A proper posted speed limit sign and the speed painted on the pavement. "Bot Dots" help a little without the bump.

And who is speeding ? Some other rich yuppy clown in Marin who has his / her own NIMBY issues. Marin is full of self centered NIMBY clowns with too much time on their hands and not enough time to slow down and drive the speed limit.

The illegal immgrants are to blame, as usual!

The fact that 85% of drivers were exceeding the speed limit means that the posted limit is too slow. Asking residents (who know nothing about road engineering and all the associated negatives connected with speed bumps) to decide yes or no on the installation was ridiculous. Those bumps are not only not green, but may make the difference between life and death for someone who needs emergency medical response and has to wait longer for EMTs to arrive because of the bumps. DUMB!

Is this really news?

The Marin IJ has nothing better to do than report on a speed bump that affects .001 percent of the population?

More bumps more fun, go to Kentfield see for yourself. If you remove them, please hire immigrants, they are fast but won't exceed the speed limit.

Naso says the bumps "cause delays in emergency response," If the small delay was really a LIFE OR DEATH matter, why have so many other communities installed them?

What a waste of taxpayer dollars. What a ridiculous design. Rip them out and put in something with a more widespread impact. I'm disgusted, glad that the issue is in the paper, and glad I don't live in that neigborhood.

I do not think that anyone would want to have speed bumps on their street by choice. There are pros and cons to any strategy to slow vehicles. Speed bumps seem inconvenient to drivers, are not particularly attractive, have ugly signs or ugly painted curbs associated with them.

Two years ago, a driver slammed into my home at over 40 mph. I fear that someday someone's child, a senior citizen, or other pedestrian will be seriously hurt or killed on my street. It's is not a matter of IF it happens but WHEN. The city council, local police, and other individuals in authority aren't particularly interested in addressing the problem even though I've been told that speeding is the number one complaint in this city. Speeding is a serious problem and needs to be dealt with in some manner. Speed bumps are not perfect but it is a way to mitigate a serious public safety problem. People do not have a right to drive whatever speed they please. Suggestions?

If you move to Bolinas, you won't have that problem. I just walk everywhere I go. No speed humping problem here.

Day Hiker is wrong. Most people drive too fast in residential areas. It's not a sign that the speed limit is too slow. It's a sign that people need to be sensitive and educated to the dangers of speeding.

Whenever I read about a person hitting and even killing a child because they didn't see them coming I think this tragedy could be avoided. People don't drive defensively. They drive aggressively. No one cares unless the tragedy happens to themselves or a loved one.

Something needs to be done to curb speeders. It's not a waste of public uses to work on this.

I remember being able to play ball in the middle of the street growing up in Marin. Cars never went that fast and when one would approach, it would slow down, we would run to the sidewalk and let it pass. But that was 50 years ago - you could play outside like that for 1-2 hours and see maybe 1-2 cars. Now people just speed through neighborhoods without regard to who lives there - putting parents, kids, pets and seniors at risk, even in their front yards and driveways. I have fond memories of sitting on the warm curb in front of my parent's house waiting for the ice cream truck to amble on by. I doubt any parent would would let their kid sit on a street curb now - but then again, the ice cream truck is a thing of the past.
