Saturday May 5 | Alton Telegraph
In Saturday's paper, there was an article about a small lock in Kampsville. The reason why it was small is because they didn't have large barges back then, until they put the Alton lock in and Winfield lock in, and that backed the Illinois River up, so they did away with the lock in Kampsville.
The small town of Kampsville, on the Illinois River, was the site of a small government dam and attracted summer visitors to its sandy beach and cottages.
