This topic was created as a way for citizens to address their areas of concern in Nicholas County. In what areas would you like to see changes made...and what specific suggestions do you have to see them achieved? Improvements in schools, roads, recreation, social services, animal welfare, tourism, arts, etc - whatever topics personally interest you. How can change be brought about, and what do you think is needed to do so?

Please don't turn this into a gossip topic - there's plenty of other threads for that - some of us are really interested in hearing what the concerns of our citizens are.

I would love to see some road work done, I am constantly in need of an alignment which I can not afford. The roads are too narrow, state & county.

The mess on Author Road needs to be completed. I have never in my life witnessed such a pathetic job installing underground lines. Please finish what was started, if not, someone is going to have a wreck!!!!

The kids there enjoy cars, racing etc. Why doesn't someone build a sanctioned drag strip for them to race on Friday and Saturday nights. These kids spend a lot of money of their vehicles and they want to show them off, but it need to be safe.
There would be revenue made from the entrance and admission fees, not to mention the concession monies. People would come from other counties to participate in the events too.

I wonder how much something like that would cost...it would probably be popular here.

Carlisle I belive needs more employment opportunities. We need someone to open up the old Jockey plant and get people to work.
We also need something else for our children to do, while I believe a drag strep would be great for teens, we still need something else for our younger kids, like a boweling Alley, movie theater, skating ring, or even an Aracade place, a name brand clothing outlet as well.
Or why can't we have all of the above, it would create more jobs and bring in more tourism and youth from elsewhere. I agree about the "Blackberry Festival" needs to be brought back to its orignal place as well, last year was a dud. I went for a whole half hour and didn't spend a dime.
I do not have money to do these things, but I know there are a whole lot of Nicholas county people who do, and who could make these thing possible.
We do not have to change our Country atmoshepere by bringing in coropate giants (Walmart's) to do these things what about some citzens here make these things possible! We sure have the space to do these things why can't some local farmers nearby town donate some land, under a contract stated that once revenue picked up( or lease it out) they would allow for the selling of the location of property. Lord knows alot of them do not need as much as they have and it wouldn't hurt them a bit, they could ven write it off on their taxes.

You are so right. I think a roller rink would be good for everyone. Section it off and have different booths, crafts, farmer's market, flower shops, etc.

we have had an arcade here before and there were drugs being sold out of it so it was closed the teens around here vandalize things to the point that the county doesnt want to spend any money to fix them anymore (the playground equipment at the ball parks and also the bathrooms)what we need worse than anything is some business to get these young adults off the streets and drugs and get them into working

We need strong minded leader with integrity like Joseph Orazen to be the next Superintendent of Nicholas County School System.

I decided to use my real identity for my comments.

Carlisle is a great town, but I'm afraid that many of the businesses mentioned previously (bowling alley, theater, skating rink, etc.) simply wouldn't be able to bring in enough money to remain profitable. Much of the money in Nicholas County comes from agriculture, and I think that's where we need to look for growth. Imagine if the Jockey plant were converted into a market with booths for farmers, booths for Amish crafts, booths for local artists to market their goods, etc. There could be a food court there, and yes, probably even a bowling alley, but instead of relying solely on Nicholas Countians to spend money, it could draw in a great deal of external visitors and their money.

It would be great if the young and old in your community would take the Foxfire approach to learning and sharing with others about their Kentucky Heritage. I have visited this school in Georgia several times. It was all started years ago by a teacher and his students. The youth and adults of Carlisle should take and interest in their Bluegrass heritage. I am sure their are wonderful elderly people in the community who would love to share their stories and their crafts with the young people. Foxfire and Rabun Gap Nachochee School draw thousands of visitors each year. Take a look and see if something like this would work for your community. http://www.foxfire.org/index.html There is also something similar to this in Eastern Ky, called Appalshop http://appalshop.org/about/ I believe they get additional funding from the State of Kentucky.

Best of Luck To You.

I Agree with you! That is a wonderful idea.
I was just putting some suggestions out there. However, I do think some forms of entertainment for our youth is helpful.
I was not suggesting that Nicholas Countians put in all the money(or did not mean too) But to start off the investment who else is going to? Maybe some grants? I do not know all the answers, but as many seem to agree some things need some changes.
For who ever thought I was nuts, what do you suggest?

While I agree with you to an extent, But think about our younger children. And the fact that not all of Nicholas Countains are that way. There are ways to stop all of that from happening. And that should start with support from the good in of the citzens that do care about whats happening in our County and with our children, by pulling together and taking an effort in helping one another to prevent those things from happening again.

Strong leaders who enforce the rules would be necessary for any place to thrive.
I also think it would be good for the churches in the town to hold a meeting and hear their ideas.

Pardon me, but the topic is titled what changes does Nicholas County need. It is my opinion the community needs Joe Orazen to run for school superintendent in order to bring about positive change within the educational community as he has done at NCHS before the aforementioned situation occurred. The topic is asking a question that could encompass numerous topics covering various suggestions/responses from posters. I do not see that my response in any manner provides you with a venue to judge my intellect or mental state. I do not enter discussions where people choose to resort to personal verbal attacks because they disagree with the poster. Good Day, Sir/Madam.

Wow, touched a nerve, must be very personal to you!
But, he already has his own post anyway!
This is for the community!
As you stated changes in Nicholas County!
Not Nicholas County Schools!
That is all I've got to say on this as I'm not on here to bash anyone, Just stating simply, that he has had his spotlight now let the rest of Nicholas County shine as well!
Sorry, Orzan does not reflect on all of Nicholas Countanians. Please, post on his own post for endorsements.

How about turning the old Jockey plant into a jail? It's a former manufacturing facility, so it is fairly open to build what we want inside it. There is federal and/or state money for a grant to be able to do this. It would create jobs for here. plus we wouldn't have to send people who are arrested to Bourbon or Montgomery county. It would actually save the county money in the long run.
