Approximately 150 concerned citizens gathered last Thursday for the Town Hall meeting held in the fellowship hall of the Methodist Church in Jakin, in hopes of keeping the Jakin post office from being closed. The building was filled and overflowing, with many of the folks standing just outside the open double doors.
Among those attending were the mayor and council persons, several area post masters, Rep. Gerald Greene, Senator John Bulloch and representatives for Rep. Sanford Bishop and Rep. Johnny Isakson.
Jakin, along with Andersonville, Bluffton, Cedar Springs, Coleman, DeSoto, Hartsfield, Mystic, Oakfield, Parrott and Wray, is among the eleven post offices serviced by the Albany office that are listed for study to determine if the sites will remain open or be consolidated with other offices.
Steven Cruz, manager of Post Office Operations Group 6, began the meeting by reading a prepared statement and then opened an informal comment / question and answer period. Cruz commented that the volume of first class mail is down, over 50% since 2006.
He stated that 3,700 of the USPS’ 32,000 post offices and 252 out of 506 processing operations were being considered for potential closure, including Dothan and Albany. Cruz added over 7,500 district level positions have already been eliminated.
Many of the residents voiced opinions and asked questions, trying to determine what could be done to insure that the office remained open. Cruz reminded them that,“This is just a study, no decision has been made,” and encouraged Jakin postal customers to fill out surveys they received in the mail.“Anything you put in those surveys will be a part of the study and become public record.”
Cruz noted that if a decision is made to close the post office,“Your address will still be Jakin. If you have a street address, that address will remain the same. If you have a post office box, you would be moved to the Donalsonville post office. Of course, your box number would change, but your zip code would still be the same. The mail carriers would remain the same, they would just be working your mail out of Donalsonville.”
Postal officials say a major reason for the postal service’s financial crisis — it has lost $20 billion over the last four years — is a 2006 law requiring the post office to pay an average of $5.5 billion a year for 10 years to underwrite 75 years of health coverage for future retirees.
Jamie Crozier, Deputy Director from Congressman Bishop’s office stated that Bishop and 81 other congressmen signed a letter to the chairman of the Postal Regulatory Commission last month urging the rejection of widespread closure of rural post offices to offset the costs of the 2006 law.during “Underlying this post office closure proposal is the premise that drastic cuts in costs are the only way to maintain the solvency of the Postal Service,” stated the letter.“This assumption is inaccurate, and once again we are presented with false choices.” The letter also urges Congress to allow the Postal Service to use some of the $50 -$75 billion that Postal Service employees and customers overpaid to the Treasury during the last 30 years to cover healthcare payments. As of May 2012 when USPS Closing More Post Offices and Mail Processing Centers. because of President Barack Obama on it. since died Bush Administration because post office are down. will facing a Bankruptcy. will lose a Postal Code including Jakin, along with Andersonville, Bluffton, Cedar Springs, Coleman, DeSoto, Hartsfield, Mystic, Oakfield, Parrott and Wray.

well i guess people can get stamps at a grocery store now or another post office. most people have to leave jakin to find work anyway.
