The Department of Homeland Security

is undertaking a new initiative to allow local police to check the immigration status of those persons it takes under custody. The plan has sparked protest by at least one human rights group.

In the past, detainees' fingerprints were checked against a Federal Bureau of Investigation database to determine if they had a criminal history. Under the Secure Communities Program, however, their fingerprints will also be checked against DHS' Ident

database, said Anna Hinken, a DHS

spokeswoman.

The program checks a detainee's biometrics against a watch list of nearly five million known or suspected terrorists, criminals and immigration violators that have been identified by U.S. government agencies and Interpol, Hinken said.

Biometrics are also checked against more than 100 million sets of fingerprints DHS has collected since the start of US-VISIT, which takes biometrics from foreign visitors entering the United States to determine if a person is using an alias, she said.

The goal is to prevent dangerous criminals--drug offenders, murderers, rapists, robbers and kidnappers--from being released back into communities, said David Venturella, the program's executive director in a statement.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a DHS agency, administers the program. If an individual's fingerprints match a set in the DHS system, an automated process notifies ICE and the local authorities who made the arrest. Cases are reviewed individually and violent offenders could face deportation if they are staying illegally in the United States.

The program has been adopted in several North Carolina counties and DHS plans to extend it to state and local law enforcement agencies nationwide. Duplin County, N.C., Sheriff Blake Wallace said in a statement that the system "is another tool in our arsenal to make Duplin County an even safer place to live, work and raise a family."

Human rights advocates worry about a slippery slope. The initiative is a departure from the norm. Ordinarily, police do not check offenders' immigration status.

As far as I am concerned, law enforcement being allowed to check if someone they arrested is breaking the law in any way (including being in this country unlawfully) is just common sense. There are many avenues an immigrant can take to be here legally without being a citizen, we shouldn't turn a blind eye to those who have a blatant disregard for our laws.

I totally agree with you. Laws are laws, and should be enforced.

The president wants to bring these people into legal status, just like our previous president, since we are an immigrant nation. He also proposed that their crime be acknowledged and that fines be levied against them. He is not trying to drop 287(g), in fact his administration expanded it. And while he does not agree with e-verify, he does have other methods proposed for rooting out illegal workers in US companies. Whether you agree with our president or not, at least get your facts straight.

Times are tough and it's easy to forget the principles our nation was founded upon. What if people and politicians had this attitude when your family came to this country?

When my family came to this country, they did so legally. They went through detention at Ellis Island, they were sponsored by family members who were citizens and were gainfully employed, they learned English. They got green cards and then became employed. And then they became citizens. They never once took a government handout. We grew up shopping in thrift stores, wearing hand-me-downs and never saw the inside of a restaurant till we hit high school and could go to McDonalds with out friends. If you couldn't pay cash for it, you didn't need it.

I am first generation American and have no sympathy for ILLEGAL immigrants. I give total support to those that come here legally.

I don't know why racism against Spanish-speaking people continues, but you are a first class bigot. Why don't you go burn crosses on the hispanic family's front lawns Mr. Duke?

i dont support any immigration or immigrants here if I can help it

the problem with the chicagoland area is that they are
walking around in a state of denial

the chciagoland area has 300 thousand immigrants and at least ten percent at any one time are undocumented
the state has been giving out drivers licenses, lines of credit
and housing and all kinds of state and local bennies to
(especially) los mexicanos
now that they are hooked on dependence, their arrogance is
obvious
and the bleeding heart polocks and irish just sit there
with deer in the headlights expressions on their faces
they need to go thru the entire chicago land area block by
block and drag people out of their houses if they have to
the gang problems are immense and have been allowed to go on
for decades

you see what happened in LA
they cordoned off blocks and went in and swatted the entire area

expect that to start happening in other places as well
