The board of directors for a Sioux Falls animal shelter that shut its doors two months ago officially has filed for bankruptcy.

In the final year before consolidation, the superintendent of both the Viborg and Hurley school districts is resigning at the end of the month.

Viborg and Hurley residents voted Tuesday to combine their school districts in 2012-13. Ninety-two percent voted yes in Hurley, where enrollment is just above the state's 100-student minimum before consolidation becomes mandatory.

Farmers and landowners have long counted on getting a government check every year regardless of how profitable they might be or whether they even planted a crop.
