BEAUFORT – Hope Haven of the Lowcountry, the children’s advocacy and rape crisis center serving the 14th Judicial District, which includes Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, Jasper and Allendale counties, will announce on October 22 a partnership to assist victims of child abuse and their families.
Nearly 40 agencies throughout the five-county region are signing on to the coalition, including prosecutors, investigators, police and sheriffs’ offices, social services and hospitals.
“This will truly be a substantive and cooperative partnership of all the area’s agencies that are involved in protecting our children from abuse,” said Hope Haven Executive Director Shauw Chin Capps.
“We are all joining hands to protect our community’s children,” she said.
The announcement of the partnership and the official signing of the revised Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) protocol will be from 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 22 at The Technical College of the Lowcountry (TCL), New River campus (Heritage Multimedia Room) on U.S. 278 between Hardeeville and Bluffton. The public and media are invited.
The Multi-Disciplinary Team approach will serve to enhance the individual efforts of each agency. “This cooperative partnership will enable us to provide a coordinated investigation, prosecution and treatment of child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse cases, resulting in the most optimal case outcome,” Capps said.
This is an important effort in the battle against child abuse in the Lowcountry and will facilitate the process of information exchange among the participating agencies.
“Hope Haven and the Multidisciplinary Child Abuse Response Team members have been working diligently for almost a year on this collaborative effort, and we are very excited to have a protocol which outlines best practice standards in handling child abuse cases. We will follow the MDT protocol, in partnership with all the public and private entities involved in child abuse cases,” Capps said.
The team will be coordinated by staff of the Children Advocacy Center/Hope Haven.
Elected officials and community leaders also are being invited to this announcement event.
