Fire ripped through a Hickory Hills banquet hall early Sunday morning causing significant damage and disrupting planned Mother's Day and First Communion parties.

A Hickory Hills police officer is being hailed as a hero for rescuing the owners of a popular banquet hall after fire erupted about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, said Walter Sherman, battalion chief for the Roberts Park Fire Protection District in Justice.

In only its second home match of the season, Brownstown Central defeated Jeffersonville 160-189 at Hickory Hills Golf Club.
