*Jillian Lee Cole of Hector, a civil engineering major in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science at Syracuse University, has been named a 2008-2009 Remembrance Scholar. *Melissa Wilber, daughter of Steve and Pam Wilber of Horseheads, was honored recently at the State University of New York College at Cortland and presented a President's List certificate. The President's List is for those in the top 5 percent of their class. Wilber also was inducted into the Tau Sigma national honor society and the Kappa Delta Pi international honor society for educators. Wilber, a 2005 graduate of Horseheads High School, a senior childhood education major, also received the Senior Academic Achievement Award, which is awarded to the top five seniors in the School of Professional studies pursuing their first bachelor's degree at SUNY Cortland. *Amy Buchanan, daughter of Jim and Karen Buchanan of Erin, was honored recently at the State University of New York College at Cortland and presented a President's List certificate. The President's List is for those in the top 5 percent of their class. Buchanan, a 2006 graduate of Horseheads High School, is a sophomore early childhood/childhood education major. *Kari Smith of Corning received the Managerial Accounting Award given to a student who has exhibited outstanding performance in managerial accounting, and the Charles J. Kocian Award given to a accounting major showing the greatest proficiency in statistics at Lycoming College in Williamsport. Smith is a graduate of Corning-Painted Post West High School. *Kara Chalk, daughter of Jeff Chalk of Horseheads and Joy Parker of Elmira, was named to the spring dean's list at Penn State University. Chalk, a 2006 graduate of Elmira Free Academy, is a biology major. *Stephanie Herzig, daughter of David and Sharon Herzig of Elmira, was recognized during graduation ceremonies as an Ideal Bonaventure Woman, exemplifying the spirit of St. Bonaventure and the ideals of St. Francis through community service and academic excellence. Herzig is an elementary and special education major and history major and also a dean's list student and a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society. *Micah Nicolo, son of Mike and Maureen Nicolo of Horseheads, recently received his Ph.D. in earth science from Rice University in Houston. Nicolo, a 1997 graduate of Horseheads High School and a 2001 graduate of Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, received the department's awards as outstanding earth science graduate student and outstanding graduate student teaching in earth science. *Sasha Carey Reed, daughter of Arthur and Sheila Reed of Elmira and wife of Scott Swarthout, formerly of Elmira, received a doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Reed received the Graduate Student Research and Creative Works Award, one of only two awards conferred on doctoral students by the university. A 1993 graduate of Elmira Free Academy and a 1997 graduate of Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y., she has accepted a joint position from the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Montana in Missoula, where she will pursue post-doctoral research in terrestrial ecology. *The Diven Elementary School class of 1964 is planning its first reunion for 11 to 2 p.m. July 11 at the school in Elmira. Plans include a tour of the school, a presentation on its history and a social hour. The program is open to Diven students from other years.
