Will County looks for broader use of construction zone fines

The Will County Sheriff's department wants to change a state law to give authorities broader use of money they collect in fines stemming from construction zone violations. Under state law, motorists who are ticketed for speeding in a construction zone face an extra $125 fine, which goes back to the agency that issued the ticket into a Transportation Safety Highway Hire-back fund to hire off-duty police to monitor construction zones.

Police: Man shot to death by Harvey cops sexually assaulted minor girls

A man who was shot to death by south suburban police when he tried to run them over with his car earlier this year in Harvey has been identified as the attacker who sexually assaulted two minor girls at a Calumet Park hotel, police said. Charles Brown, 22, used the classified ads website backpage.com to set up a meeting on March 21 with two girls at a hotel in the 12700 block of South Ashland in Calumet Park, where he allegedly assaulted the girls at gunpoint, according to a statement from Harvey police.

Former Southland tax preparer imprisoned

The owner of a former tax preparation business in Hazel Crest has been sentenced to two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to filing a false income tax return for a client. Wright was indicted in 2009 for allegedly preparing 45 fraudulent tax returns for 13 clients between 2002 and 2005 in a scheme that the government said cost it about $92,000 in tax revenue.

Despite opposition, Illiana stays in Illinois' long-term road plans

Despite overwhelming opposition to the proposed Illiana Tollway, members of a regional transportation panel on Wednesday kept the project in its long-term plan against opponents' wishes. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning discussed the revisions to its regional transportation plan, dubbed GO TO 2040, Wednesday morning and will vote on its final approval Oct. 8 in a meeting with the Metropolitan Planning Organization Policy Committee.

Hazel Crest man fatally shot in Harvey

Jabbar Y. Lewis, 33, was fatally shot near 159th Street and Finch Avenue, the Cook County medical examiner's office said. Lewis, of the 17500 block of Oakwood Drive in Hazel Crest, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he died at 3:45 a.m. Sunday, the medical examiner's office said.
