Geocachers have fun with hobby while helping to clean Bayou Rapides
Benjamin Fuselier turned a scavenger hunt into a environmental challenge Saturday. The Alexandria resident belongs to several groups dedicated to geocaching -- the practice of looking for various containers across the world using GPS devices -- and challenged 15 of his fellow geocachers to clean up Bayou Rapides near Stracener Street in Alexandria. Paper, bottles and various items were scattered across the bayou. 'We thought it was a good idea to clean up the area while we do the scavenger hunt,' he said. 'This is called the 'Cache in Trash Out' initiative that allows us to pick up trash while we play the game. This is a great way to give back to the community.' Fuselier said there's 1.5 million geocachers in the world, with thousands in Louisiana. Geocaching originated in Oregon, he said. 'There's the North Louisiana geocachers, Acadiana geocaching and Louisiana geocaching groups,' he said. 'The containers contain a message to let them know they found the container. There's no prizes or anything, and people play for points. The points are like for bragging rights.' Titus Haynes of Haughton has been a geocacher since 2007. He found out about geocaching from a college professor. 'I've found 7,400 (items in the hunt) and 2,200 (items in the hunt in Louisiana),' Haynes said. 'It started with finding ammunition cans in the woods, and now you are liable to find something as small as your pinky finger. The GPS will take you within 25 feet of the object. This is a nice way to clean up an area and have fun.' Bill Smith of Batchelor has been a geocacher for three years. Smith said his daughter got him involved in geocaching. 'I've been to geocaching events in Mandeville, Lafayette, Bossier City, Shreveport and San Francisco,' Smith said. 'The thing I love is I'm able to meet new people while geocaching. This is my first trash pick-up event, and I'm all for helping preserve the environment.' For information on geocaching, go to www.geocaching.com.
