Hartselle council president to serve as mayor following Hall's DUI arrest

The City of Hartselle made plans on Monday to move forward with the business of running the city following the mayor's arrest on September 5. Mayor Don Hall was charged with DUI in Limestone County. He was booked in jail and posted $1,000 bond.

Hartselle City Attorney Larry Madison issued a statement Monday saying Hall "will be absent from the city or otherwise unable to fulfill his duties as mayor for an undetermined period of time while addressing personal issues. Hartselle Council President Bill Smelser will act as mayor during Hall's absence.

The arrest of any elected official is bound to draw attention but this one's garnering even more comments as Hall, who was elected in 2012, is the chief executive of the largest city in the state without legal alcohol sales. Hartselle voters have repeatedly rejected legal alcohol in the city of 14,500 people, despite the fact it is located adjacent to Decatur and Priceville where such sales are allowed.

The presidents of Ukraine and Russia on Saturday said the cease-fire between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed rebels was mostly holding, but the truce still appeared fragile in its first full day.
