Trutanich says he's a watchdog, not a politician

Full story: Daily Breeze

Someone needs to explain why a clear thinking city attorney has to dig into the retirement fund only because it is running a deficit. I would think that might be the job of the mayor or the council or the city auditor. He says he only advises in suggesting various legal options, yet acts otherwise. My point is only he seems to talk to the press one way and acts in his job in another way. Mixed signals is not the best strategy for a transparent elected official.

Why shouldn't he dig into the retirement fund when seven appointed people have resigned from the board. Who else will look into it.....the Mayor that appointed them.......the controller that the Mayor put in place.

Trutanich is the only elected official in city hall with any integrity. The guy that labeled him a bully owes the city $6M and the press responds. the article mentioned low voter turnout, it forgot to mention he got a higher percentage of votes than the Mayor.

He is an outsider, the council and the mayor would love to see Trutanich criticized because he threatens their power base. I hope he decides to run for Mayor and really clean-up what is fast becoming the most corrupt city in America.

Born in LA but live in a suburb. I still want to see the LA cancer stopped before it continues to spread. I love this man's courage. The LA strip is a cesspool. I wish he would take surface streets to work to see. Also, yes, make AEG pay for their obvious debt.

But who is the "watchdog" that is watching Trutanich? He is currently trying to BULLY his way into purchasing a San Pedro property that is in escrow with someone else. He was upset he missed out on a deal so he has brought in the FBI, attorneys and others to try to create a mess so HE can get what he wants. No, the guy doesn't like politics...just getting his way.

I voted for this lout, and I am angry at the way he is defining his job. He will never get my vote again. He is only and advisor and prosecutes misdemeanors. He is a bully and is giving all san pedrans a bad name.

Trutanich got rave support for sticking up for the tax payers of Los Angeles and questioning AEG. We need someone like him who is not afraid and acts like another lapdog to city council and the mayor. Keep up the great work Trutanich

Uncle Nuch needs to add some finesse to his skill set. Nuch has shown us he can be tough, time to show us he can be smart as well.

In my opinion if he wants to knock some heads together, he should start with his loudmouth, influence peddling relatives (ok, attempted influence peddlers since no one takes them seriously).

My wife and I met Carmen at the the "Conquer The Bridge Race" on Labor Day. He gave a nice and short speech, was extremely friendly, and my wife and I thought he was just a cool guy to speak with. He actually was asked a question about something to do with the race, and he took the lady to someone who was able to help her. Just a regular guy doing a tough job. He'll get our vote next time for sure. This is what is needed in LA. Not another politician, but a man who just seems to enjoy his life and job. Good for you Carmen.

Carmen Trutanich needs to lay off pot smokers. They vote and will remember his attacks on them, come next election. The people have voted to allow access to medical marijuana. Many people want recreational use to be legalized.

Instead of wasting tax payer money trying to put this genie back in some 1950's bottle, he should be leading the fight to LEGALIZE, REGULATE AND TAX marijuana use. This approach will make access manageable; stores that sell it located in correctly zoned areas; and it would eliminate the criminal element from the business of supply. The people want a safe, organically grown product from American farmers.

I agree - I believe the property is located on Bluff Place, overlooking the Harbor? Sounds like a big conflict of interest to me.....

the db deleted my comment

too funny.

nuch had a lot of people helping him into office.

one such group was called the committee to elect carmen trutanich. politician all the way.

big man goes after pot smokers, wow. while hard core crime is rampant, nuch is going after people who like a weed (a natural plant that cannot be patented!) that could replace, at a much lower price to the consumer, oil companies, paper companies, clothing companies etc. what a hero.

The appointees opted to resign rather than avoid breaking conflict of interest laws by having to give up their investment management activities elsewhere. The adherence to legal controls is working fine without the intervention of the city attorney. So far, there is no allegation of impropriety or malfeasance to pique the interest of the city attorney. Apparently, he is drawn to the LACERS only because of their investment losses.

I believe that CityAttorney Trutanich is doing an excellent job considering all that has been put on his plate since his election. I also feel that the Pilot Program is a positive step for the youth as well. Anything that can help the youth of San Pedro as well as the youth in the inner cities is greatly appreciated.

Corporate attorneys are supposed to represent and advise their corporate clients while city attorneys are supposed to represent and advise their municipal clients. The boards of directors and city councils make policy while their attorneys implement it.

Not so in LA where Carmen can do what he wants. Time to do away with the City Attorney as an elective office. The City Council members should have a lawyer with THEIR interests at heart.

Gert's right, this bully was bought and sold, and is utterly beholden to his boss and mentor Steve Cooley who bought him the election. Why else would Cooley go all out to recruit a nobody FROM LONG BEACH outside the city limits, who's been on the wrong side of the law for 25 years lining his pockets, if not to play ball with "certain friends" and to keep lining his own pockets? The way those two thump the bible and pretend they're "slaying the philistine," how the Nooch put it early in, makes my stomach hurl.
Phony operators and manipulators all the way, they played some old people in a snit about billboards and westside L A and valley traffic and development (which Nooch couldn't care less about) like an accordian. Laura Chick was right on the money about him and it only gets worse. Lied to the pot people to get them to work FOR him and throw tons of money at him, a disgrace that even the lowest politician wouldn't sink to, lying that openly.
HOW ON EARTH does a goon get away with threatening to sue and ruin financially and careerwise every Planning Commissioner (they're VOLUNTEERS on top of it), to jail everyone from city Building officials to a councilwoman and the attorneys and executives of one of L A's biggest companies, because they won't sit quiet at being shaken down?
Nooch doesn't understand what his job is, its limits and what he is allowed to do - figures with Cooley in charge of felonies as his man, he can keep threatening anyone who doesn't kow-tow to him to "walk you across the street to my friend the DA." What he's doing to the owner of a private property who won't sell, bringing in the DA and feds, is illegal. His insisting on hiring 200 private secret police like Cooley has to harass his staff is power-hungry nuts.(The Deputy DA's just filed a lawsuit against him for all kinds of harassment and persecution - what Trutanich dreams of doing himself.)
A pile of dumb older people who believe all government is corrupt are screaming "Go Nuch! Get the scum!" like the stupid rabble they are. The papers that went along with this scam are the stupidest or just plain most rightwing Republican hacks who ever lived, a disgrace to the city.(Shaking down a top business and job provider isn't exactly a Republican "virtue.") He believes he can do ANYTHING he wants because he thinks "strong" means bully: look at the sign behind him on the bookcase! Only the "weak" follow rules.
Nooch gives a bad name to Pedro, to Serbians, to graduates of unaccredited night law schools, most of all, to this city.
Will the false propaganda ever stop (what about seal killer, don't forget that one, please). The city is over 60% registered democrats, the guy won in a landslide, he did not get there with Republican votes. The only ones calling him bullies are the lawbreakers and politicians that don't like anyone asking questions. Stop hating, the bitterness is blurring your judgment.

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Capricorn

You'll have difficulty finding equilibrium in your emotional life at the moment; try to control the impulsive side of your character. At work, your usual powers of intuition will be clouded. Fits of feverishness may bother you and break down your energy. If you can get out into the countryside for a walk, you'll feel much better.
