The National Park Service is soliciting public comments on a proposed extension of the Western Maryland Rail Trail to Paw Paw, W.Va. The agency said Wednesday it will hold public meetings May 16 in Hancock and May 17 in Paw Paw on an environmental assessment of the project.

Fort Frederick State Park staff will lead a free guided bike ride along the Western Maryland Rail Trail from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Victims of child abuse were remembered in Hancock. The second annual walk to end child abuse was held in Widmeyer Park.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office says a female inmate is dead after apparently hanging herself in a jail bathroom.

The Washington County Sheriff's Department says a vehicle operated by Elwood Liggett, 56, of Warfordsburg, Pennsylvania had come up a hill in the area of 13240 Round Top Road near Hancock, when it crossed the double yellow lines, and hit a vehicle driven by Robert Munday, 42, of Hancock.
