Run! The Swine Flu is among us! This amazes me, why is there such a big deal being made out of the swine flu. Claims first victim? Out of the 14,000 people who have died from regular seasonal flu since January, are any of them from NJ? America loses 30,000 people every year from the flu. A couple dozen people die in a 2 month period and we start freaking out. I don't get it?

I dont see you showing any compassion for the families of the 36,000 to 40,000 people who die from regular flu every single year in America alone. Doesn't that make you more of an inconsiderate jerk? Or are you just a complete moron?

While I agree that the "regular" flu kills many people a year, and while I understand that the flu vaccines are not 100% effective every year...at least you can try to protect yourself and your family from the regular flu especially if you have asthma, diabetes, or are pregnant, very young or elderly. With the H1N1 flu there really is not a great opportunity to protect yourself. Sure we have Tamiflu now, but if you do not take that it in time it is ineffective. You may say the H1N1 flu is fairly mild, but you do not know how any one person will be able to fight it when exposed. I am very concerned for this winter if there is not a vaccine available......

I seriously doubt a vaccine will be available prior to this winter. It has to be developed and tested. The usual strains of flu vaccines aren't always available and many people go without it every year. So many people go "unprotected" normally. Some even speculate that the vaccines cause these viruses to aggressively mutate (I don't know about that). The high risks groups are who have to be most careful. But, the best way for people to protect themselves is too wash their hands, and follow the suggestions of the cdc. Reports indicate, right now, people that do not have underlying health issues have been handling infection as well as our usual strains of flu. As a parent I wonder, how many times do our kids wash there hands before eating when they are at school? The answer is NEVER. Is there hand sanitizer available? Messages like that are what's needed to be given. I agree this winters strain may be worse. Some people are intentionally exposing themselves now (not something I would want to do) to build up a natural resistance.
