The award was partially based on Chavez's service with the U.S. Army as a combat medic while serving in Vietnam with Delta Company, 4th Battalion, 12th Infantry, 199th Light Infantry Brigade, for which he was awarded the U.S. Army 's Silver Star for heroism and gallantry in action.
