First Union soldier killed May 21, 1861 at Grafton
The first Union casualty of the Civil War was killed in Grafton, Virginia A 151 years ago today Within a few days of the shelling of Fort Sumter in the harbor far away in Charleston, South Carolina in April 1861, Virginia Governor John Letcher send troops into Grafton to organize companies for service in the Confederate army.
