John Rachor used his helicopter to find three members of a Gold Beach family after they got lost while picking mushrooms on Saturday.

Three mushroom pickers lost for six nights in the rugged forest of southwest Oregon with no food considered eating their dog, and used the screen on their dead cellphone and the blade of a sheath knife to flash a signal at the helicopter pilot who found them.

GOLD BEACH, Ore. - In a Feb. 5 story about the rescue of three family members lost while mushroom picking, The Associated Press erroneously reported that the helicopter pilot who found them had flown to safety a mother and two daughters lost in the same region in 2006.

GOLD BEACH, Ore. - With this year's expiration of a federal program designed to compensate Oregonians for declining timber sales, counties statewide are losing an allotment that has totaled $2.6 billion since 2000.

Tracking dogs, airplane crews and people on foot searched southwestern Oregon's rugged forests Thursday for three missing mushroom pickers who disappeared almost five days ago.

GOLD BEACH, Ore. - Sheriff's deputies in southern Oregon say they've found an SUV and some clothes belonging to three missing mushroom pickers but the adult couple and their son are still missing.

Authorities say they believe a body recovered near Gold Beach is that of a man swept into the ocean a month ago trying to rescue his dog from the surf.
