MONROE, La., - There's still more than two weeks until Christmas, but there's already a lot of parents signing up with the Salvation Army to help them get the tree they can't afford to get for their kids.

"Angels are being adopted, but we still have over 200 that still need to be adopted," Gilliam said.

Those students who fought in "the struggle" at Southern University were honored at the 2011 Southern University Law Center Civil Rights Commemoration Symposium.

Every year, the Salvation Army of Monroe welcomes area residents with warm place and a warm meal.

But perhaps this year, the Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign bell rings just a little more urgently.
