49-year-old woman killed in crash
A 49-year-old Georgetown woman was killed Saturday night and two other people were injured in a two-car accident on U.S. 9 near Harbeson, state police said. The name of the victim is being withheld by police pending notification of family. The crash happened about 7:50 p.m. a mile west of Prettyman Road. Police said Corey A. Ortwein, 20, of Lewes, was driving a 2008 Pontiac G-5 east on U.S. 9 when he swerved into the westbound lane and narrowly missed striking a westbound vehicle that swerved out of the way. Ortwein then struck the front of a westbound 1995 Honda Accord. The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene, Master Cpl. Jeffrey Hale said. Ortwein was taken by emergency medical workers to Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, then transferred to Christiana Hospital in Stanton with serious injuries not considered life-threatening, Hale said. A passenger in Ortwein’s car, Kara B. Leonardo, 44, of Georgetown, also was taken to Beebe and then transferred to Christiana with serious injuries. Ortwein was not wearing a seat belt but Leonardo was, Hale said. The woman killed was wearing a seat belt. U.S. 9 between Prettyman Road and Gravel Hill Road was closed as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared but has since been reopened. Police ask anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Cpl. Jay Burns at (302) 644-5020 ext. 112. Text tips may be sent with keyword “DSP” plus your message to 274637 (CRIMES). Tips also may be submitted anonymously through Delaware Crime Stoppers, which offers rewards, at (800) TIP-3333 or www.tipsubmit.com.

Volunteers are needed Saturday to collect holiday decorations from grave sites at Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington. The cleanup event will take place from 9 a.m.-noon at the cemetery at 33rd and Market streets. Volunteers will bring the decorations to a work site in front of the public mausoleum on the west side, take them apart for recycling and gather fallen branches and take them to the three-sided building on the east side for chipping. Volunteers should bring their own work gloves and wire cutters. A snack and beverages will be provided. The mission of the Friends of Historic Riverview Cemetery is to operate and maintain Wilmington's most culturally diverse, nonprofit public cemetery and support its restoration and preservation. For information, visit www.riverviewcem.com. Tuesday's Sussex County Council meeting will be held later than usual -- at 1 p.m. instead of 10 a.m. -- because of a light agenda. The council will hold its normally scheduled public hearings on zoning applications at 1:30 p.m., but because the agenda is so slim, it made sense to consolidate the morning and afternoon sessions, a county spokesman said. The council's meeting schedule could see some additional changes going forward, with County Administrator Todd Lawson scheduled to discuss the topic Tuesday. Meetings are held at the County Administration Building on The Circle in Georgetown, with a live audio broadcast online at www.sussexcountyde.gov, where the agendas are also posted. The Sussex County League of Women Voters will hold a public forum next week on road privatization. A panel of officials and leaders will discuss how Delaware's road system works, with the state handling roads outside municipalities and subdivisions and homeowners responsible for roads in subdivisions. The forum is part of a series of League events on privatization of public services. It will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Beebe Medical Arts Building, 18941 John J. Williams Highway, Rehoboth Beach.
