Jerry Holly of Specialty Excavating works to remove debris from a jetty created decades ago along the banks of the Kenai River at river mile 22.5 on Wednesday afternoon in the Funny River area.

The power flickered on and off at Janice Chumley's house north of Nikiski on Tuesday night, right in the middle of a game of Scrabble, she said.

Wednesday morning, HEA estimated more than 5,000 homes and businesses in parts of Nikiski, Kenai, Soldotna, Kasilof, Sterling and Funny River did not have power due to strong winds that hit the system hard and new outages that were reported as the day progressed.

At Milepost 17 of Funny River Road sits Central Emergency Services' Station 5. Emergency medical technician Sam Evanoff operates the station and responds to calls in the area.
