The Sebastian County Quorum Court ran into problems Tuesday night due to a request by County Judge David Hudson to meet with individual justices of the peace individually to discuss budget priorities prior to the start of the annual budget hearings, with the prosecuting attorney saying the meetings could violate the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act. In a separate meeting Tuesday, the Fort Smith Board of Directors approved the waiving of building permit fees for the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education, saving the institution more than $63,000 on the construction of a multi-million campus at Chaffee Crossing.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department is set to open bids on 47 road and bridge projects totaling an estimated $303 million. Three of the projects are expected to account for nearly two-thirds of the total cost, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.

Northwest Arkansas' business development and job production grew by a whopping 5.6 percentage points in 2013 - ranking the area as the 26th fastest-expanding economy in the U.S., according to new statistics released Tuesday by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis . The closely-watched BLS report from the U.S. Department of Commerce also spotlighted the fact that the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers area's professional and business service sector saw the greatest economic expansion among the nation's 381 largest metropolitan areas in 2013, increasing real Gross Domestic Product growth by 3.33 percentage points.

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department is scheduled to hold a public meeting in Fort Smith to seek input on a new plan to extend high-speed passenger rail service across the state, according to a news release. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the River Parks Events Building at 121 Riverfront Dr., the release states.
