Long road to complete Pembroke Pines soccer park and nature preserve

At 10:24 a.m. Monday in west Pembroke Pines, Mayor Frank Ortis cut a 4-foot green ribbon, concluding a transition of swamp and melaleuca that took eight years. The land is now 56 acres of nature preserve and soccer fields called West Pines Soccer Park & Nature Preserve.
In May, after the grass matures a little more, about 150 children who play on all-star teams will test out the field. In August, up to 1,800 recreational players will begin using the site at 350 SW 196th Ave. They'll move from nearby Chapel Trail Park, with room for only 1,400 players. 'On sign-up day, people line up like it's a concert,' Commissioner Angelo Castillo said. Most of the players weren't even born when the area west of Interstate 75 began booming with families, after Hurricane Andrew wiped out part of Miami-Dade County in 1992. Read more
