I have NEVER gotten good service in any one of the bussinesses you list. Now I might vote no because it's bad policy or because I want a CEQA document - but I sure as heck am not going to do it our of love for our crappy local bussiness'.

Wow when you put it that way I will defiantly vote yes. When you put a name to those worthless businesses that I have received such horrible service from and reminded me what I my experiences have been, I cant honestly see why I would vote no. Petco? Costco? Buya!!!

YES on A
If we get a "mall" with a Costco and Target:
I will still shop at Shoe Fly and Botique 120.(When I can afford it... which is like once a year)
I will still shop at Habitat
I will still eat at Schats, Marinos, the Thai house, Petrona's, Applebees, the Mexican place at the south end of State street and Simonas.(We will eat anywhere with a kids $0.99 dinner night... Applebees)
I will still shop at Mendocino Book Company
I will still shop at Expressions candy store
I will always shop at Kohls (they have great coupons!)
Many of the other shops I never spend money at anyway because they all had those "No on Measure B" signs up last election and I'm still boycotting.
What are you people scared of? Costco or target doesn't take business from these great little shops!
Safeway, Raleys, Albertson's and the Santa Rosa Costco and Target are the one's that will lose most of my business. But you no growth people don't care about these because they are "big box stores."

Its a hard choice, crappy service, selection and prices -vs- big business, local growth.....

I wish the locals did a better job..I always felt the crappy service is because, "i can grow a crop and make my money, what do i need you for" attitude. I'm probably wrong but i sometimes get that feeling...

First of all voting for Measure A is not a guarantee that you will get a Costco or a Target. In fact Costco's Legal Department has ordered Yes On A to stop using their name on on literature. Target is considering similar action

Second we already have land zoned for this purpose and Costco and Target are welcome to go there.

This is NOT a big box issue, this is a zoning and local control issue. If the measure passes we have NO say in how this property is used...Our planning Department and the officials we have voted in and entrusted to make decisions with our interest at heart will have no say either.

Voting for Measure A does NOT mean you get a Costco. I means you vote to give away your rights as a citizen to be part of the process.

Lived here most my life. Raising my family here now too. I've been to all these businesses and have never had 'crappy' service, that's my experience.

I also don't spend my money in SR either, I prefer to shop local and support my community. Well expect for Petco since we no longer have a pet store. I have reptiles. But I buy my food for them through a local breeder; only go to Petco when she is out of rats.

I've never understood the argument that you have to go to SR to shop. Anytime I've tried I wind up being disappointed and finding an equal deal right here in town.

I think there is far more wrong with measure A than beneficial and will be voting NO.

For those of you that care anyway....

I am sure the person who grew up here and is "known" gets good service. I have seen it happen. I was with a local girl for a lot of years and she always got great service. They treated me like garbage unless she was there - don't expect me to protect them from the big boys.

Out of all the reasons to oppose Prop.A the UDJ opposes it because they want to protect the marketplace for established downtown businesses...so in other words they believe we should legislate against a free market and consumer choice so the downtown businesses can continue to operate per their status quo of offering poor inventory, higher prices and shoddy service.

Never mind the 700 jobs The Crossings will provide, the 160 million dollars we currently spend in Santa Rosa, or the convenience of having consumer choice here in Ukiah- according to the UDJ that is trumped because Poma TV, Mendo Lake or DFM will make less money if any new businesses are allowed to compete with them.

I oppose this opinion on principle alone- I believe in the free market system and resent the UDJ suggesting hurdles be placed in front of the consumers in an attempt to force them to buy locally, at inflated prices, or travel two hours to Santa Rosa to shop.

If Prop.A is defeated three things will happen in Mendocino County- We will continue to have a shortfall of tax revenue, many of us will continue to shop in Sonoma County, and we'll continue to have the Masonite eyesore, probably forever, which will serve as a monument to well meaning but terribly misguided individuals who don't understand no growth equals stagnation and decay.

You are forgetting one important point - many studies have shown that these big box stores actually reduce the total number of jobs available because they tend to put the local shops out of businesses. For every 2 jobs they create, 3 more are lost elsewhere. That would mean that we are looking at a loss of over 1,000 jobs locally, and a net loss of over 300. Make no mistake - if this mall is built, Ukiah WILL lose jobs and the economy WILL suffer. If you want to give the local economy a boost, vote no on A.

Give me a freakin' break. There is only about a dozen job downtown. I really don't think hey are going to lose their jobs. but if they do it's is only 12 jobs, so what... there's going to be 700 jobs, they can get other cashier job. No problem, right? right...

Come on everyone, the 700 jobs thing is a maximum possible number if everything goes right. That is the total potential number, and could take years. It won't be 700 jobs the day after the election. Why don't go for a more realistic number of sustainable jobs in a mixed use situation, and not a bunch of "possible" retail jobs?

Folks don't care about the DDR, they just want a place to get that Costco stuff without having to go to Rosa, they just tired of looking at all that trash sett'n down there now. The young and the poor just want a place to work if'n they ain't into the dope yet. Hell, build it, build it big, most will come and shop even the haters....after the dust settles.......

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Virgo

You're finally at your best after relaxing and catching your breath for a moment. Now that you're rested, it's time to do some of the things you've been putting off lately. Make a sudden appearance to surprise someone from your past. No matter how many new people you meet, don't forget that old friendships are the glue that holds the relationship cycle together. Keep in mind that a present doesn't have to cost much, as long as it comes from the heart.
